Coatings Development
your Competitive Advantage!

Precision cleaning to produce a metallurgically clean surface ready for subsequent treatment is achieved by utilizing the process of glass bead peening. The fatigue life of components are enhanced by the stress relieving process known as shot peening during which the surface of components are exposed to either a metallic and on occasions nonmetallic media. Shot peening produces beneficial induced surface stresses which enables components to be made of either; of a lesser grade of material which aids the manufacturing processing, or of reduced mass, both of which directly impact on the final cost of any component.

Hi - Tech Blasting has created a new paradigm in surface treatment and coatings.

This generic and novel surface modification and coating technology has the potential to combine many differing coating materials onto a wide variety of substrates of unlike composition. The materials which can be combined are unlimited and even the most unusual dissimilar materials can be combined. This coating process offers a unique benefit as the substrate is held in compression and the induced stress from within a coated component will not weaken the bonding mechanism of the coating. It is envisaged that the coatings produced would be used within the aerospace, automotive and manufacturing industries.

Hi - Tech Blasting is now seeking expressions of interest to enable this coating technology to be fully utilized. Assistance in the form of direct financial, commercialization management, technical support, the supply of raw materials or testing services will all be reviewed and balanced to ensure a successful outcome.

What is?: . . . . . your questions answered

mechanical brushing - mechanical plating - peen plating - mechanical alloying
ball milling - shot peening - abrasive blasting

What is ...... mechanical brushing?

Mechanical brushing is a dry technique that is relatively simple and relies on the precisely controlled buffing method to deposit a coating.

Mechanical brushing is variation on the generic concept of mechanical plating.

What is ...... mechanical plating?

Mechanical plating is a modern name for peen plating.

Mechanical plating is a wet process for depositing metal from a powder without the use of electrical energy.

Mechanical plating relies on the simple metallurgical principal that if you have two oxide free metals hitting each other then the softer one will cold weld to the harder one.

Mechanical plating uses a rotating barrel that impacts mechanical energy to the impact media and this is used to peen the powder out flat into a metallurgical bond, initially onto the substrate and subsequently onto the previously deposited particles to build up thickness.

In general, only soft malleable metals can be deposited such as cadmium, tin, lead, copper, brass, silver, bismuth and lithium, or alloys of tin and cadmium or tin and zinc are plated mechanically.

Coating thickness usually are in the region of 2 - 25 microns. Heavier coatings up to 110 microns are often referred to as mechanical galvanizing or cold galvanizing.

Mechanical plating offers a big advantage - a coated component that is free from hydrogen embrittlement.

What is ...... peen plating?

Peen plating was developed in the early 50's and the modern terminology is mechanical plating.

Peen plating is a wet process in which a spherical peening media is mixed with metallic powders to form a slurry which is used to place a uniform coating onto small irregular shaped parts. No alloy layer is formed during the coating process.

Typical coating thickness is up to 48 microns.

What is ...... mechanical alloying?

Mechanical alloying is a powder technique in which solid state reactions caused to occur when materials are processed in a ball mill under an inert environment.

Mechanical alloying is a specialized manufacturing method which can be used to produce a wide range of materials with novel compositions and micro structures.

What is ...... ball milling?

Ball milling is a process that creates to produce a wide range of new light materials by simply mixing two elemental powders and mechanically milling them in a high energy environment such as a ball mill.

The action of the ball mill generates sufficient controllable heat to make supersaturated and stable alloys that are economic to produce in quantity.

What is ...... shot peening?

Shot peening is a dry cold working process that utilizes round shot thrown at relatively high velocity at a metal surface.

Shot peening causes a plastic flow of the surface fibres extending to a depth depending on the impact of the shot and the physical properties of the part.

Shot peening creates what is called a compressive surface layer which results in a part with considerable greater fatigue strength.

What is ...... abrasive blasting?

Abrasive blasting is primarily a dry process that employs an angular blasting media to clean a variety of metal surfaces in preparation for subsequent treatments.
